The drawing is made to scale and shows various angles and views such as the doors, end, sides and top of the container. The drawing also shows the dimensions and position of the equipment fitting to the shipping container such as the locking rods and air vents. Shipping container technical drawings are used by architects and engineers to communicate information to people on a building or construction project. The drawings are particularly useful as a reference material when measurements are required, since the drawings are made to scale.

I needed to design a shipping container house for my son. The SketchUp program was able to produce a floor plan and show it in 3D with colors and materials illustrated on it in very little time and effort. This was clearly the best choice of CAD software for me to use for the article. The free version is available for as long as a person wants to use it. LayOut will allow me to convert the 3D drawings from the regular SketchUp program into 2D floor plans, elevations, sections, and details. There is also a savings with the hardware that will be needed to use SketchUp.

It does not require as fast or as expensive of a computer as AutoCad. SketchUp is the best CAD software to use for any shipping container home designer who wants to save money while producing drawings that will quickly illustrate their design. AutoCad is a very good tool to use if you want to draw a complete set of construction documents. In my opinion, it is better for that than SketchUp for 2D drawings. The -AR Array command is used to make multiple copies of a single object, according to defined rules. Refer to the diagram below to locate the rectangle correctly. Click on the corner points marked A and B. This rectangle will be used in the next step as a base for the top rail. For the second point, zoom in on the other end of the wall, and click on the point marked D in the diagram below. Type L. Draw a line from the midpoint of one of the short sides of the floor, away from the shipping container. We will erase this line later. Type -LA. Then type OF. When prompted to turn off the current layer, type N. Press [Enter] to complete the command.

Isolating a layer sometimes makes it easier to work. For the first point, click a point on the end of the temporary line you just drew. For the second point, move the mouse and AutoCAD will preview the mirrored location of the objects. Refer to the picture below. For the first corner, click on a point away from the shipping container we will move the box into its correct position later. Type M. Select the rear wall and set it in place, so that its outer face aligns with the midpoint of the corner post as shown in the figure below.

Use the points on the corner boxes to set the dimensions of the box base. If you use the points at the top of the corner boxes, you can set the height as Type PL. Trace the outline of the roof opening between the top rails on all four walls. Select the outline you just drew and use -1 negative 1 as the height.

Select the door and set it in place, so that its inner face aligns with the point marked A in the figure below. Select the door and mirror it around the midpoint of the shipping container floor.
